Trance states are a common part of human life and can be biologically necessary for survival. Hypnosis and trance are words that are interchangeable. In a trance state, our awareness is intensely focused and brainwave activity is slowed down. Milton Erickson said that trance was a state by which our attention is focused on exactly what is important at that moment. Hypnosis or trance is the means by which our unconscious mind talks to our conscious mind. In a hypnotic state, we are able to influence our autonomic functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, food digestion, immune system response, et cetera, as well as changing the way our nervous system interprets sensory information (pain control). Under hypnosis we can also experience accelerated learning, generate new, creative alternatives and solutions to problems, and access memories of experiences that we have consciously forgotten. Our unconscious contains all of our sensory experiences and emotions associated with any particular event. When an experience is too emotionally traumatic for the conscious mind to handle, the unconscious hinders the conscious access to that information. This is where repressed memories come from. Hypnosis is one of the few ways of truly accessing and understanding what is present in our unconscious mind. Understanding what we unconsciously believe and remember is the biggest step to fully healing and integrating our lives.
